The Toronto Chapter kids and teen clubs provide a time for children and youth who are dealing (either directly or indirectly) with alopecia to come together. The kids/teen clubs are organized and delivered by a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers who are also affected by alopecia. While each support group (kids/teen club) is uniquely different from the previous gathering the overall goal of these groups is for children and teens to learn they are not alone in dealing with this unpredictable disease. Together the kids engage in fun activities, crafts and group challenges. There is always an element of acknowledgement as to why the kids are attending and the strengths of those who have lived with the condition for some time share their experiences and offer suggestions to those who have been newly diagnosed. Overall the focus is on being together, building confidence and feeling supported through active and fun activities.
The CANAAF Kids/Teen clubs periodically offer community awareness and gathering events. In 2013 some of the events involved roller skating, a teen visit to Yorkdale Mall, cooking at a Superstore and playing at the Funnery indoor playground. These times provided both parents and youth a time to have fun and socialize and spend time with others experiencing similar situations.
