Bald Barbie Doll

How The Bald Barbie Doll Can Help Children Cope With Hair Loss

When a person experiences hair loss for the first time, it is an incredibly difficult thing to process emotionally. It’s hard to understand why it is happening, and to come to terms with the fact that hair might never grow again.

When Alopecia or hair loss becomes a reality, this not only affects the person who is losing hair, but those around them too: children, partners, siblings, parents. Adults will wonder what they can do best to support you, and kids will try to make sense of what is happening. Children like to see people and dolls that look like them. This can be a huge part of their self acceptance.

Celeste and Her New Wig

A Confidence Inspiring Activity

This creative activity is based on the children’s book Celeste and the Wig Shop to help children recognize and be proud of the many wonderful qualities they have, with or without hair.

Parents can first download the drawing of Celeste, and the grid for making strips of paper “hair”. Click the images to download.

Help your child identify and write different things about themselves on the strips of paper and glue them to the photo as “hair”. They can write qualities they like about themselves such as kindness, or things that they are really good at like playing soccer, and drawing. It can be anything that reminds them of the exceptional person they are. This is showing them as well as others that hair does not define them or prohibit them from being AMAZING people, capable of anything! They can also colour, dress-up, and decorate Celeste in any way they want to.

Materials for this activity:
